Just enough warmth in the air made it possible to get the Lad and his friend up north for a lovely weekend of camping and hiking. Based in Jay Cooke State Park, we headed north to Split Rock Lighthouse, above Duluth, for some sightseeing and hiking. Later, we spent an hour or so on the Superior Hiking Trail around the Knife River, hiked down Gooseberry to its mouth opening into Lake Superior and then back upstream to view all of the falls.

After a popularly demanded stop at Betty’s Pies, we concluded a full day with adventure up and down the St. Louis River. The night included a massive campfire, roasting of hotdogs, cocoa, and the howling of nearby wolves.

I’m happy to have had the chance to share so many great outdoor experiences with my son this season. On to skiing!
